My grandmother loves borloloy. Cousins shared that whenever they need something to spice up an outfit, they woud often turn to Mama D for some quirky “shine” wear. She has everything, from Brooches to medallions that goes way way back in the 50’s. She would readily offer her collection for the girls in the family to choose from, some was even made as impromptu gifts. She is particularly fond of brooches and she has lots of it, from pigs to giraffes….birds and flowers.
I think I may have gotten that from her. I am always on the lookout for something to add in my collection. It has to be unique and out of this world. While hers are brooches, mine are necklaces.
There is something old world and classy about the stuff she puts on. She is careful with her layerings and is choosy with her choice of bling.
Since her passing, the girls in the family were gathered and then were made to choose a particular bling. There were 3 to 4 boxes filled with costume jewelry, and from among the boxes, I chose 3 items that spoke to me…..a giraffe brooch, a green stone and white pearls set on a long gold chain necklace and a necktie pin that has hummingbirds engraved on it (which belonged to my grandfather). While the other girls had their pickings of brooches, watches and rings. The more precious ones are reserved to my mother and her sisters.
It was in a way, something to remember her by, as a reminder of the glamour, the kindness and unconditional love that she possessed. At least now we each have a piece of her that shines and gleams with class and grace.
